NCCAT BOARD OF TRUSTEES COMMITTEE MEETING SCHEDULED FOR NOV. 4, 2021

CULLOWHEE – The North Carolina Center of Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Board of Trustees will have a committee meeting Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in a virtual committee meeting from the NCCAT Cullowhee Campus, 276 NCCAT Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28723. The purpose of the committee meeting is to discuss planning for the future for facilities at the Ocracoke campus. Members of the public may view the meeting live at www.nccat.org

In this professional develop seminar, we will explore how educators can use art and music to get their students excited about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Teachers will learn how the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio are demonstrated in art, music, and nature. We will then explore how teachers can apply these principles to their lesson design to motivate students to find success in STEM disciplines.

Do you want to strengthen your math PLCs and support teachers with planning for unfinished learning? If so, join NCCAT on December 7th to learn best practices for math acceleration. Sessions will focus on intentional planning for identifying pre-requisite skills in math instruction and PLC components that place students’ learning needs at the forefront. A planning protocol will be shared along with a PLC framework to guide leaders’ work in their schools. Roundtable collaborations will be included, providing time for colleagues to delve into current math instruction issues and problem-solve. This session is designed for teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders in grades K-12. Lodging and meals are provided.

Words bring texts to life. Vocabulary is key to comprehending and enjoying what we read. This session will engage participants in exploring systematic vocabulary instruction. Participants will explore morphology, learn how to select words for study, and develop a plan for vocabulary instruction in their classroom. This program is designed for language arts teachers and instructional coaches in grades 4-9.

Open to teachers in their first, second, or third year of teaching, this program supports motivated beginning teachers by strengthening their knowledge base and classroom expertise. Teachers will develop their craft by understanding how to teach to the depth of their standards and differentiating for multiple levels of learners. Beginning educators will also have the opportunities to refine their teaching philosophies and class expectations. Within this session, teachers will identify their most immediate needs for their classrooms, and time will be spent exploring solutions to those needs.

In an increasingly digital world, we are inundated with media and information. Through literacy tools and activities, learn how to help students navigate and utilize digital literacy to understand grade-related science topics and expand their critical thinking skills. Participants will explore bias and common scientific misconceptions. Take home templates and protocols to assist in guiding these conversations with students. Learn how to strengthen understanding of grades 5-12 science standards by weaving together hands-on lessons, problem-solving, and curriculum designed by the National Center for Science Education.

MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) is the umbrella under which all educational practices fall. It has four main pillars: Attendance; Behavior; Academics, and; SEL (Social Emotional Learning). How can we use this research to create optimal teaching behaviors that equate to maximum learning outcomes?
