The first few months of a school year can cause disillusionment for any teacher, but especially for novice educators. During this Focus Friday Session, beginning teachers will examine their current teaching practices in regards to classroom management and identify ways to engage students in learning. In addition, beginning teachers will use data from administrative evaluations and classroom assessments to improve student performance. Come find ways to reset your focus, manage responsibilities, and create joy in the day-to-day art of teaching.

How can digital tools support writing instruction in middle grades classrooms?  Using the NC ELA standards for writing, participants will explore new strategies for teaching writing while integrating innovative digital tools. Sessions will include using mini lessons to teach writing alongside reading and using digital tools to support writing instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from across NC, and create a unit of writing to implement in their classrooms. This program is designed for language arts teachers and instructional coaches in grades 4-9.

As we embrace vocabulary instruction, we want to use strategies that make connections to new math terms in multiple ways. In this session, we will explore Marzano’s steps from his recent text, Teaching Basic, Advanced, and Academic Vocabulary (2020), and learn how to use these strategies to our math classrooms. This virtual session is intended for teachers and instructional coaches in grades 3-8.
