NCCAT Math Tip - Dr. Bonnie Bolado

Estimation is a strong part of number sense in all levels of the math classroom, strengthening students’ reasonability and problem-solving skills.

Dr. Bonnie Bolado, Senior Math Specialist, came to NCCAT after holding a variety of positions in education and serving as a professional development presenter for various educational organizations. In her previous position Bolado served as assistant principal of Canton Middle School in Haywood County. Bolado also served as a math and science teacher in Haywood, Jackson and Onslow counties. She has presented for NCCAT, Western Region Education Service Alliance, North Carolina Principals & Assistant Principals’ Association and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Bolado recently led the NCCAT programs “Developing Engagement and Understanding in Middle Grades Math” and “New to the Exceptional Children’s Classroom: Surviving and Thriving.” She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, holds a Master of Educational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University, and recently obtained a Doctor of Education degree from Gardner-Webb.

During this Focus Friday Session, beginning teachers will examine their current teaching practices in regards to classroom management and identify ways to engage students in learning. In addition, beginning teachers will use data from administrative evaluations and classroom assessments to improve student performance. Come find ways to reset your focus, manage responsibilities, and create joy in the day-to-day art of teaching.

How can digital tools support writing instruction in middle grades classrooms?  Using the NC ELA standards for writing, participants will explore new strategies for teaching writing while integrating innovative digital tools. Sessions will include using mini lessons to teach writing alongside reading and using digital tools to support writing instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from across NC, and create a unit of writing to implement in their classrooms. This program is designed for language arts teachers and instructional coaches in grades 4-9.
