13938 • Reading, Writing, and Ready by Third Grade: Early Grades Literacy Instruction - Cullowhee

Preference will be given to teachers in Grades K–3.

Literacy instruction is as difficult as it is essential. This program will provide early grades teachers with a complement of research-based tools and strategies to help answer some of their more burning questions: How do I teach “close reading” to students who don’t yet know the alphabet? What level of writing can I attain from children who are still learning to spell? How do I simultaneously provide enrichment for advanced readers and remediation for delayed readers? How can I integrate reading and writing instruction into all other subject areas? Finally, what does this instruction look like in the classroom and how are student engagement and learning measured in this process?*

*Administrators of teacher participants are invited to attend sessions on Thursday, July 16, and engage in activities that build and support school-wide literacy. Overnight accommodations will not be available. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided.

North Carolina is home to nine national parks stretching from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Cape Hatteras shores. These parks offer diverse opportunities to spark students’ desire to learn more about the rich science and history of our state. Discover how park resources, including informational texts and supplemental materials, can enhance literacy skills. Learn ways your students can experience our parks both physically and virtually. As the National Park Service prepares to celebrate its 100-year birthday in 2016, partner with national park rangers and literacy experts to create lessons that will engage student learning in your classroom.

The NCCAT Research and Development Teams program offers educators an opportunity to meet in a residential setting devoid of distraction to create and advance departmental, school, or district-wide projects. These projects might consist of new programming, research, planning, or curricula. Gather a team together to create or refine your own innovative approaches to early grades literacy or digital learning. Early grades literacy or digital learning projects will be given preference. All projects will be considered. Come prepared to share your knowledge and progress with other teams from around our state. Single rooms, meeting space, internet access, and meals for the participants will be provided by NCCAT. Travel and the cost of substitute teachers are not covered. Teachers, administrators, central office personnel, and district coordinators are encouraged to apply.

13935 • Reaching Reluctant Readers: Bringing Boys to Books - Ocracoke

The statistics are consistent: young male readers lag behind their female counterparts in literacy skills. In many instances, the reading scores of boys bring down the reading scores for the entire school. Explore the social, psychological, and developmental reasons why boys lag behind girls. Identify reading materials you can use in your classroom to capture and keep the attention of your struggling readers. Experience a variety of instructional methods such as text selection designed for boys, contests and competitions, focus reading groups, and the latest websites and blogs to boost literacy achievement. Discover solutions to capture the attention of reluctant male readers and examine strategies that motivate boys to sustain reading in the classroom and at home.

Davidson County Schools Work with NCCAT and North Carolina Educators Ahead of Chromebooks Rollout

CULLOWHEE (February 24, 2015)—Educators gathered together at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching January 26–29 in Cullowhee to learn more about Google Chromebooks—ahead of the rollout of the devices in Davidson County Schools.

Instructors from Martin County and Transylvania County, which have had similar rollouts of the devices, were on hand to share tips and answer questions. Greg Cline, chief technology officer for Davidson County Schools, says the school system has a three-year plan for dispersing the small laptops.
