A message from NCCAT Executive Director Richard Thompson

Responding to a request from North Carolina educators we were pleased to host EdCamp WNC on Nov. 15 in Cullowhee. It’s exciting for me as a life-long educator when I think about the 54 teachers and administrators who took part of their weekend after long hours during the week, to explore how to use digital learning to improve education for the children of our state.

We were happy to read a recent story by the Wilmington StarNews welcoming home Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Adam Peterson. It was great to see this man who serves our country welcomed home by his daughter Aleeya Sampson. We were not surprised to see NCCAT alumna Beverly Ladd helped with setting this reunion up at Pine Valley Elementary School.

13870 • Reading and Writing for Science and Math in Secondary Education – Cullowhee

276 NCCAT Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28723

Reading and writing instruction has moved into every classroom. Changes in the standard course of study require that students read much greater amounts of non-fiction and construct viable written arguments using reason and evidence. Literacy instruction at the secondary level is a challenge even to those who were trained to do it; it can be downright terrifying to anyone else. This seminar will help secondary level teachers support their students’ reading comprehension. Techniques for using writing as a formative and summative assessment—and how to grade it—also will be included. This session is intended primarily for science and math teachers at the secondary level and also would be appropriate for other STEM subjects that incorporate non-fiction texts and writing as a part of the curriculum.

We've talked before about Gamification here at NCCAT. We are very happy to offer an online course soon that has filled with educators ready to learn. Students are motivated due to personal choice and meaningfulness, real-time feedback, the ability to collaborate or compete, and over time, they learn stay persistent in learning due to prior successes.

NCCAT Director of Programming Dr. Jonathan Wade passed along this Gamification resource on his Twitter feed @NCCATWade.

In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell tells us that to become expert at anything requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Unfortunately, our struggling readers will never make that investment of time if they hate what they are asked to do. Participants in this day-long program will learn how to transform worksheets, fluency practice, and other solo efforts into engaging activities that still reinforce essential literacy skills. The agenda for each daylong program (9am to 3pm) is the same. Sign up for only one. Teachers at the K–5 grade levels are encouraged to attend.
