13855 • Hands-on Activities to Engage Students in Early Grades Literacy and Beyond – Cullowhee

276 NCCAT Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28723

In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell tells us that to become expert at anything requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Unfortunately, our struggling readers will never make that investment of time if they hate what they are asked to do. Participants in this day-long program will learn how to transform worksheets, fluency practice, and other solo efforts into engaging activities that still reinforce essential literacy skills. The agenda for each “Hands-on Literacy Activities” daylong program (9am to 3pm) is the same. Sign up for only one. Teachers at the K–5 grade levels are encouraged to attend.

13911 • NCCAT Teacher Leadership Institute – Ocracoke

2 Irvin Garrish Highway, PO Box 1540, Ocracoke, NC 27960

North Carolina’s Teachers of the Year are invited to join us on Ocracoke to examine educational leadership and positive responses to institutional change. Teachers of the Year have heard the call to leadership, but what is the next step? Discover how to continue your growth as an educational professional. True leadership emerges naturally from the integrity and identity of the leader. Explore your own integrity and selfhood in a community of other dedicated teachers who are embracing leadership in their own lives. Look into your leadership strengths and areas of growth by focusing on challenges inside and outside the educational realm. This seminar will not focus on management principles. Rather, taking our own lives as text, we will explore our inner landscapes to become more conscious of the foundation from which we lead. Join in our dialogue about how teachers can spread their enthusiasm for learning to other members of the school community.

Their distance from the mainland, their close proximity to the continental shelf, and the confluence of the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream all add to the singular nature of this part of our state. In partnership with the North Carolina Coastal Federation, this seminar will focus on the formation and stability of these landforms, the seasonal effects of storms, the science behind these physical events and the real-time digital tools that now allow students and teachers to track and understand data related to geologic and atmospheric phenomena. Return to your classroom with a better understanding of the islands and with research-based distance learning resources that will allow your students to encounter and understand the Outer Banks.
