October Professional Development Offerings at NCCAT
CULLOWHEE—Teachers will have several opportunities in October for programs with the North Carolina Center for Advancement of Teaching, a recognized national leader in professional development programming for teachers.
EdCampWNC Returns to NCCAT in October
CULLOWHEE—Educators can learn and share during a day of professional development at EdCampWNC Saturday, Oct. 13 at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.
EdCamps, which began in 2010, are not like a traditional conference with a set schedule determined months ahead of the event. This professional development model has an agenda that is created at the start of the event by the participants to fit their needs. Participants are encouraged to attend sessions that are best for them.

North Carolina Teachers of Year Take Part in NCCAT Teacher Leadership Institute
OCRACOKE—North Carolina’s 2017–2018 Teachers of the Year joined the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching to examine educational leadership and positive responses to institutional change.
Teachers of the Year discovered how to continue growth as an educational professional. True leadership emerges naturally from the integrity and identity of the leader. Participants were able to explore their integrity and selfhood in a community of other dedicated teachers who are embracing leadership in their own lives.
Math and STEM Specialists Join NCCAT Faculty to Support Statewide Professional Development Needs
CULLOWHEE—The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching strives to meet the current and future needs of North Carolina teachers. As a result, our two new faculty members will lead math and STEM professional learning. Senior Math Specialist Dr. Bonnie Bolado will support teachers incorporating math standards and digital learning into their instruction and Senior STEM Innovator Darcy Grimes will provide hands-on STEM lessons to help teachers prepare students for an ever-changing world.
NCCAT Receives ARC Grant to Support Teacher Leadership Institutes
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) awarded a grant for $95,782.00 to the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Inc., to support Teacher Leadership Institute programs in 12 western North Carolina counties.
Application Deadline Extended for Frye Honored Educator Scholarship
The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching is currently taking applications from foreign language or ESL teachers for the Luz M. Frye Honored Educator Scholarship (HES) for FY 2018–2019.
Normally, applications are taken from January 1 thru April 30th. However, due to a lack of applications from foreign language or ESL teachers for academic year 2018–2019 the deadline has been extended.
Summer Math Camp at NCCAT
CULLOWHEE—The Smoky Mountain Math Teachers’ Circle (SMMTC), a professional learning community for mathematics teachers in Western North Carolina, gathered for its fourth annual Summer Math Camp July 1–3 at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.
