NCCAT will hold a five-session series to enable teachers to earn an NCCAT Literacy Badge. Attend all five and earn a badge or attend individual sessions of your choice. In order to promote student understanding of concepts of print, alphabetic knowledge, application of the alphabetic principle, and basic conventions of our writing system the foundational skills for reading must be understood and taught in depth by our teachers. The five sessions will comprise a study of the building blocks of literacy for success in beginning reading. Effective instruction in these fundamental components holds the key to life-long learning for every child in your classroom.

(March 6; 15224) Phonics—The understanding of the systematic and predictable relationships between written letters and spoken sounds—which directly impacts children’s ability to read words both in isolation and in connected text.

15227 - Gathering of Holocaust Educators - Cullowhee

The Gathering is open to teachers who have participated in NCCAT’s “Teaching the Holocaust” program. Participation in comparable intensive Holocaust education programs will be considered.

NCCAT’s Holocaust Education Program works to promote Holocaust education in North Carolina public schools. It is important to continue our efforts to promote student understanding of the ways in which our individual and collective actions shape the direction of the present and the world of the future. Join fellow alumni of our Holocaust education program as we explore teaching the Holocaust through writing and literature with various genres, including personal narrative/memoir, biography, poetry, music, art, and film. This program will help teachers focus on the power of individuals’ personal stories as an effective vehicle for teaching about the Holocaust, so they may involve students in appropriate and powerful study of this difficult topic.

How can charter school teachers build networks of support for schools, staff, and students? With each charter school operating as an independent LEA, how do we form communities with other charter school educators to share best practices and increase community support? Explore how teachers can better advocate for their specific school and charters in general and how to develop your own leadership style to help support school initiatives. Learn best practices in connecting students to digital learning and student leadership development through exploring personalized, project-based and flipped learning. Discuss ways to model these practices in your schools. Using a “make and take” model, participants will have time to develop a communication or networking plan, digital lessons, and project-based modules to share with your school.

What works in one class may be a failure in the next, with every year presenting new challenges for engaging students in various lessons. This program will review and evaluate strategies for motivating disengaged students and will prepare you to implement them upon your return to the classroom.

Our physical, psychological, and emotional wellbeing are interconnected. Through experiential lessons learn about the latest research on the connection between our environment and our genetics. Participants will study light, circadian rhythms, genetics, body systems, macromolecules, and more found in science standards grades 3—12. Literacy, science, and social studies will be featured in our activities as we discover how to make science standards applicable to our students’ lives.

15218 - Integrating and Creating Virtual and Augmented Reality in the Classroom - Cullowhee

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have become hot topics in schools. With the use of Google Expeditions, students can travel to almost anywhere in the world within seconds. They are more engaged and exhibit deeper thinking as they ask complicated questions about what they are experiencing. Using an AR app, students can transpose virtual objects into the real world, allowing them to “hold” objects like a human heart while learning its parts and functions. Seeing through VR goggles and holding AR objects are amazing opportunities that can spark a student’s interest in going to the next step: creation. Come learn how to integrate VR and AR and move your students to the next step of creating their own.

Join other initial candidates for a weekend of facilitated support and collaboration as you work on components two–four of your National Board certification submission. Participants are expected to have a draft of at least one component prior to attendance. Best practices for completing components will be shared.

Coaches will articulate their coaching beliefs and learn strategies to strengthen relationships.
