North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Interim Executive Director Dr. Richard L. Thompson was honored, along with two other educators, by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), Friday (Feb. 14), with a Distinguished Service Award. A ceremony to recognize these individuals was held at AASA’s Conference on Education in Nashville, Tenn.
Teachers and school administrators looking for a way to make Summer Reading Camp have the same energy as a traditional summer camp can get help at the 2014 North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Literacy Festival.
NCCAT, a national leader in professional development for teachers, is holding a Literacy Festival at the Cullowhee campus March 24–27. The event runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each evening. It is free and open to all area school teachers and administrators.
A joint work session of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching and the board of directors of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. will be held on Friday, March 7, in Raleigh.
Trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation have awarded a grant to the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) to support its Beginning Teachers Sustainability Project.
A joint meeting of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching and the board of directors of the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc. will be held Wednesday, May 21 at 2 p.m. in Raleigh.
Gregory E. West of Fayetteville, chair of the board of trustees, will convene the meeting. Richard L. Thompson, NCCAT executive director, and staff members will present center news and reports. Richard A. Schwartz of Raleigh, president of the foundation’s board, will provide information pertaining to the Development Foundation of NCCAT Inc.

NCCAT offers a continuum of professional development unlike any other in the nation, including programs for beginning teachers, interdisciplinary seminars for experienced teachers, and site-based instructional support, including Common Core State and North Carolina Essential Standards, and leadership training.
Governor Pat McCrory has appointed Elaine Boone of Burnsville, Linda Daves of Asheboro, Kwan Graham of Charlotte and Julie Terry of Ahoskie to the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT).
Boone had a distinguished career as a business teacher with Buncombe County Schools (1964–1966), business teacher at Yancey County Schools (1966–2001) and faculty at Mayland Community College (1972–2005).
The petition was initiated by Donald Nagel, a teacher at Northwest High School in Charlotte, who also happens to be an NCCAT alumnus. Nagel attended NCCAT’s professional development seminar titled “Wiki, Wacky, What? Web 2.0 Applications” in March 2013. He previously attended a beginning teachers’ program titled “Connect to Your Future: Celebrating Success in the Classroom” in April 2011.
Around 90 people attended the seventh annual Smoky Mountain Undergraduate Research Conference on the History of Mathematics, held at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching April 26.
