Fletcher “Gene” McIntyre Takes a Seat on NCCAT Board of Trustees

Earlier this month, Fletcher “Gene” McIntyre of New London was appointed to a four-year term by Speaker of the House Thom Tillis (R-Cornelius). McIntyre’s term began July 1, 2013.

“We are very pleased to welcome Gene McIntyre to the NCCAT Board of Trustees,” said NCCAT Board Chair Greg West of Fayetteville.

McIntyre has more than three decades of experience working in public education; twenty of those years were in school administration and 11 years were spent in the classroom. For the past 14 consecutive years, he has served as a Stanly County Commissioner, where he is currently serving as chair.

“We all know that students with effective teachers are better prepared,” McIntyre said. “High-quality professional development will ensure that teachers can be successful with all students. I believe in the mission of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.”

Dr. Richard L. Thompson, NCCAT’s interim executive director effective Sept. 1, said, “Gene McIntyre’s vast experience at all levels of education will contribute greatly to our board. His knowledge and expertise will help guide NCCAT as we implement new initiatives to better serve the teachers of this state.”

McIntyre received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University in Boone (1971). Then he attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he earned a master’s degree in school administration (1980). He earned certification from the Institute of Government: Principals Executive Program (1989).

“As an educator, I am honored to be appointed to NCCAT’s Board of Trustees,” McIntyre said. “Maintaining access to professional development to enhance and improve teacher effectiveness is vital to student learning.”
