NCCAT Hosts Carolina Coding Initiative Events

Carolina Coding Initiative will be hosting a public launch of the series Dec. 9 at NCCAT in Cullowhee that is also sponsored by Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University. The events will help Code.org’s goal of getting 10 million students of all ages to try programming for the first time this year. The initiative only seeks one hour of commitment from the learners over a one-week period. The classes are basic coding for beginners.

“The people who can talk to the machines are the wizards of this technological age,” said Jonathan Wade, NCCAT’s Director of Programming. “My interest in how technology changes our behavior got me thinking about the importance of everyone having a basic understanding about how computer code works.”

There will be free classes and demonstrations by students and faculty of local colleges and schools on Dec. 9 at NCCAT. Attendees will be able to learn about technical careers and opportunities available in western North Carolina. Students 9-years-old and older accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend events. The first free classes is from 4:30–5:30 p.m. Demonstrations (with free food) are from 5:30–6:30 p.m. and a final group of classes run from 6:30–7:30 p.m. All sessions are open to the public.

Spaces are limited in the classes, so please pre-register at: http://bit.ly/1881CJF.

Other events are scheduled for Dec. 10th and 11th along with training sessions for teachers Dec. 2–4. Teachers can register at: http://bit.ly/1fkrXcp.
