15580 - Integrate STEAM into the Elementary Classroom through Picture Books - Cullowhee
We know STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is a hot topic but, just how important is it that we integrate STEM into our classrooms? The short answer is that our world depends on it. According to the Smithsonian STEM Imperative, 2.4 million STEM jobs will go unfilled this year and it is projected to grow by 13% over the next 10 years. As teachers, we have an important role to inspire and teach our students the skills they will need to be successful in an ever-changing world. In this program we will focus on how to integrate content standards as we STEMify our classrooms to enhance our students innovative thinking.
15581, Citizen Science: Interactive STEM for Active Engagement - Ocracoke
Join the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and NCCAT as we look at ways to enhance students’ environmental literacy through participation in citizen science projects. Get outdoors and explore North Carolina’s coastal ecology as we use the unique and beautiful ecosystems of the Outer Banks as a field laboratory to collect data. Become familiar with some of the many online citizen science databases and learn ways to use the data you and other citizens collect in your classroom. Participate in simple activities that incorporate technology, math, graphing, data analysis, and writing while introducing tools that will help you develop your own lessons and programs using citizen science data.
15578 - Expanding Your Technology Toolbox: Getting the Most out of Digital Learning - Ocracoke
Digital learning is a broad category that encompasses the use of digital resources and technology to enhance and differentiate instruction. The number of available options, however, can be overwhelming. Participants in this session will gain experience with free, high-quality tools for: video and audio production, blended lessons, curating digital content, formative assessment, and coding. The program will also incorporate hands-on experiences with inexpensive technology that could be used to enhance instruction. Participants will explore these digital tools as students to best determine how to use them effectively as teachers, then leave NCCAT with a virtual toolbox of new techniques to take back to the classroom.
15577 - Teaching Fractions for Understanding: It Can Happen! - Cullowhee
Designed for grades 3-8
Fraction work doesn’t have to be just another set of rules; students can experience true understandings of fractions. This program will help teachers develop strategies for teaching fractions that go beyond the rules. Teachers will collaborate to vertically align and make sense of problem-solving with fractions for conceptual understanding. Manipulatives and models will be explored that contribute to authentic understanding. In addition, teachers will experience how to use whole number properties when teaching fractions to develop deeper connections. This program is best designed for teachers in 3rd through 6th grades, teachers who work with exceptional children with this grade span content, as well as instructional coaches who work with math teachers.
