Flex Your Reading Instruction program in Ocracoke

Teachers from across North Carolina joined us for "Flex Your Reading Instruction" in Ocracoke. Student choice is a powerful way to engage students and ignite learning. Session participants were able to learn about how the Flex model of Blended Learning can provide students with choices about how they read, discuss, and analyze texts in collaborative learning groups. Participants collaborated with colleagues to write an implementation plan and develop resources to use with students.

NCCAT Math Badge series starts with Core Instruction Models

Exciting to have teachers from across North Carolina with us for Math Badge 1: Math Core Instruction Models in Cullowhee today. Math Badge 2: Strategies for Conceptual Teaching and Building Number Sense will take place tomorrow. NCCAT is holding a four-session series exploring best practices for K-5 math instruction. The instructional components shared in this series lead to strong classroom structures that embrace mathematical thinking and honor students’ instructional needs. Thank you to these teachers for being with us.

Deeper dive into the Science of Reading program with NCCAT

Participants will delve into current Science of Reading research to support learning around the essential components of reading instruction. Our work will include discovering the tenets of structured literacy to ensure all children have access to effective reading instruction. Please join us as we spend quality time looking closely into best instructional practices that support the Science of Reading. This program is intended for classroom teachers in the kindergarten through the fifth-grade classroom.

Exciting virtual programs available in April with NCCAT. Sign up now for these programs that can be taken anywhere, anytime. The sessions general last around an hour. NCCAT helps North Carolina teachers grow in knowledge, skills, compassion, and professionalism so that students become engaged, self-motivated, and successful. NCCAT works to support teachers and impact students. April programs are: Embracing Math Vocabulary and Meta Cognitive Strategies.

Honored Education Scholarship Application Process Open

Applications for 2022 are now being accepted. Please complete your application by April 30, 2022. Honored Educator Scholarships (HES) provide an opportunity for selected teachers to attend an NCCAT seminar of their choice. An HES covers all costs associated with participation in a five-day NCCAT seminar, including program materials, instruction, food, lodging, transportation, and substitute teacher.  The honored educator also receives $250 for use in the classroom.

NCCAT faculty members part of effort to lead NC into the future with Rethink Education

North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) faculty members Ms. Elizabeth Joyce and Dr. Mandy Taylor are part of an educational effort to lead the development of effective instructional approaches and content that teachers can use when schools must close for unforeseen disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Making Number Talks Work in the K-5 Classroom - Online

Now more than ever we know the importance of routines for students in math instruction. Building students’ number sense should still be an integral part of the math block, even if it has to look a little different. Whether you are new to number talks or looking for resources to refresh your number talks, join NCCAT virtually from 4:00-5:30pm to learn this about this strategy and explore resources. This program is intended for math teachers and instructional coaches in grades K-5.
