If our pupils are to be successful in school and in all aspects of their lives, they must learn to write. What is needed to learn to write? Our students must receive adequate practice and instruction in writing because writing does not develop naturally. A basic goal for North Carolina elementary teachers is to teach our pupils to write effectively and flexibly. An important ingredient in supporting a vision for teaching writing is to apply methods with a proven track record of success. Join NCCAT to learn about research-based best practices for teaching writing to our third through fifth graders.
All children are writers but teachers must work actively alongside the child to move their writing skills to a higher level of competency. This seminar will help teachers observe a child’s writing and how to engage with them to provide that extra “nudge” to take their writing to the next level. We will examine the developmental stages of young writers and prepare primary teachers to know their students as writers. We will also look into the relationship between reading and writing and the importance of oral language in building strong young writers. Join NCCAT to learn important skills to apply when teaching your students how to thrive and grow into successful writers in the kindergarten through second-grade classroom.
How can we close “learning loss” gaps and help students gain confidence and success in math? Join us as we learn how experiential, learner-centered strategies such as Project Based Learning (PBL) can create environments of deep learning and engagement that work for all students. Using the Design Thinking framework, we will explore what PBL looks like in the math classroom and shift from “doing projects” to authentic PBL. Participants will design a project that can be taken back to their classrooms. Join us as we co-design an experiential teaching and learning culture that helps all students find success, confidence, relevance, and joy in the math classroom. This program is intended for math teachers in grades 6-12.
Open to teachers in their first, second, or third year of teaching, this program supports motivated beginning teachers by strengthening their knowledge base and classroom expertise. Teachers will develop their craft by understanding how to teach to the depth of their standards and differentiating for multiple levels of learners. Beginning educators will also have the opportunities to refine their teaching philosophies and class expectations. Within this seminar, teachers will identify their most immediate needs for their classrooms, and time will be spent exploring solutions to those needs.
Do you either have an underutilized makerspace or are you thinking of developing a makerspace at your school? This program will provide middle and high school teachers the opportunity for a deep dive into design thinking and authentic PBL to grow a “maker culture.” We will model an active learning environment where you will explore, tinker, create, and fail forward by learning how to use and apply various makerspace tools, resources, and equipment to replicate in your own school or classroom. This course is for grades 6-12.
