It is important to continue our efforts to promote student understanding of the ways in which our individual and collective actions shape the direction of the present and the world of the future. Join fellow alumni of our Holocaust education program as we explore teaching the Holocaust through writing and literature with various genres, including personal narrative/memoir, biography, poetry, music, art, and film. This program will help teachers focus on the power of individuals’ personal stories as an effective vehicle for teaching about the Holocaust, so they may involve students in appropriate and powerful study of this difficult topic.
15225 - Charter School Connections Conference - Cullowhee
How can charter school teachers build networks of support for schools, staff, and students? With each charter school operating as an independent LEA, how do we form communities with other charter school educators to share best practices and increase community support? Explore how teachers can better advocate for their specific school and charters in general and how to develop your own leadership style to help support school initiatives. Learn best practices in connecting students to digital learning and student leadership development through exploring personalized, project-based and flipped learning. Discuss ways to model these practices in your schools. Using a “make and take” model, participants will have time to develop a communication or networking plan, digital lessons, and project-based modules to share with your school.

15218 - Integrating and Creating Virtual and Augmented Reality in the Classroom - Cullowhee
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have become hot topics in schools. With the use of Google Expeditions, students can travel to almost anywhere in the world within seconds. They are more engaged and exhibit deeper thinking as they ask complicated questions about what they are experiencing. Using an AR app, students can transpose virtual objects into the real world, allowing them to “hold” objects like a human heart while learning its parts and functions. Seeing through VR goggles and holding AR objects are amazing opportunities that can spark a student’s interest in going to the next step: creation. Come learn how to integrate VR and AR and move your students to the next step of creating their own.
