Giving Tuesday is a day where everyone, everywhere can do something to support the good causes that mean so much to them. We hope you will consider supporting our work to support teachers and impact students here at NCCAT this #GivingTuesday. NCCAT provides teachers with new knowledge, skills, teaching methods, best practices and information to take back to their classrooms through high-quality professional development. The ultimate result is improved performance and achievement by North Carolina’s students.

In January, North Carolina educators have several opportunities to attend the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), a recognized national leader in professional development programming for teachers. Registration for these programs is open now. Applicants are encouraged to register as soon as possible to ensure a spot. From our literacy-focused programs to digital learning to STEM, math, and science, we have plenty of offerings designed to help teachers positively impact student learning across our state.

Programs are available to North Carolina educators at the Cullowhee and Ocracoke campuses, online, and with NCCAT faculty visiting school districts.

Join us December 11-14 at NCCAT Cullowhee for "Recipe for Problem Solving: A Computational Thinking Journey for Educators." This training, led by research scholars from the William and Ida Friday Institute for Education Innovation, will provide K-12 teachers with a comprehensive introduction to computational thinking and practical teaching strategies. Participants will explore the fundamentals of computational thinking, coding, and age-appropriate programming tools to integrate into their classrooms.

Join us December 11-15 for "Visions for Teaching Writing for Grades K-5" at NCCAT Ocracoke. A basic goal for North Carolina elementary teachers is to teach our pupils to write effectively and flexibly. An important ingredient in supporting a vision for teaching writing is to apply methods with a proven track record of success. This seminar will help teachers observe a child’s writing and how to engage with them to provide that extra “nudge” to take their writing to the next level. Join this NCCAT seminar to learn about research-based best practices for teaching writing to our kindergarten through fifth graders.

Join us for "Supporting the N.C. Portrait of a Graduate Competencies in the STEM" Nov. 27-30 in Cullowhee. The Portrait of a Graduate Competencies include adaptability, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, empathy, learner’s mindset, and personal responsibility. Each of these skills are necessary components of high-quality STEM education! Participants in this seminar will experience the Portrait of a Graduate Competencies within the context of STEM and will walk away with tangible strategies that can be quickly implemented in the STEM classroom!

The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Board of Trustees will convene their next regularly scheduled meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023, via zoom and in person at the NCCAT Ocracoke campus, 2 Irvin Garrish Highway, Ocracoke, NC 27960.

Join us November 6-9 in Cullowhee for the program - "Integrating the NC Computer Science Standards into the K-5Classroom." Participants will engage in interactive and hands-on sessions diving into world of elementary Computer Science. Sessions will focus on developing digital fluency and problem-solving skills. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge, strategies, and resources to effectively integrate the NC Computer Science Standards and concepts into their elementary classrooms. Sessions are grounded in current research, theory, and best practices, utilizing 21st century methods and pedagogy to ensure meaningful learning experiences for students.
