CULLOWHEE (October 21, 2015)—The Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) has selected Dr. M. Brock Womble as its next Executive Director. Womble has more than 22 years of experience in education in a variety of state, local and national leadership roles.
Womble has served as a member of NCCAT Board of Trustees; American Association of School Administrators Executive Committee and Governing Board; North Carolina Association of School Administrators Board of Directors and as a superintendent in four different regions of North Carolina (Alexander County School System, Caswell County School System, Hyde County School System, and Mitchell County School System). He also has experience as a teacher, assistant principal and high school principal in North Carolina.
“We are delighted Dr. Womble has agreed to join us. His knowledge, experience and commitment to teachers will be a tremendous asset to the very bright future of NCCAT,” said NCCAT Board of Trustees Chairman Linda Daves.
The number of teachers served by NCCAT, a national leader in professional development, has more than doubled in participation from 2012–13 to 2014–15. The center remains focused on supporting teachers and impacting students while working closely with the state to respond to education initiatives.
“My goals are to have NCCAT seen as the premier entity both statewide and nationally for North Carolina teachers to receive professional development,” Womble said. “I am honored to have the chance to work to provide the highest quality professional development for North Carolina teachers in an environment that recognizes the importance of the profession.”
Womble received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University in Boone. He then attended East Carolina University in Greenville where he earned a master’s degree in school administration, an educational specialist degree in administration and supervision, and a doctorate of education in educational leadership. He is a native of Winston-Salem. Womble and his wife, Dawn, have an eleven-year-old son, Bryce, and an eight-year-old daughter, Melinda.
Womble follows Dr. Richard Thompson, who has been serving as interim NCCAT Executive Director since September 2013. Womble will start on Jan. 1, when he will become the seventh Executive Director in NCCAT’s nearly 30-year history.
