Last fall, Dr. M. Brock Womble of Spruce Pine was appointed to a four-year term by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham). During the NCCAT Board of Trustees meeting last October, Womble was sworn in by the Hon. Willis P. Whichard of Chapel Hill, NCCAT trustee. Womble’s term began July 1, 2012.
“I am very pleased to welcome Brock Womble to the NCCAT Board of Trustees,” said Elaine Franklin, executive director of NCCAT. “NCCAT is committed to providing essential professional development for our state’s traditional and charter school teachers. Dr. Womble’s administrative experience working with school systems in seven of the eight educational regions will make him an invaluable resource as we implement educational initiatives designed to support effective teaching across the state.”
As superintendent of Alexander County Schools, Womble leads a team of teachers, administrators, and staff who are committed to providing an education that equips students with the skills needed to be productive citizens in the 21st century.
“I am honored to serve on the board of trustees for NCCAT,” Womble said. “As a superintendent, I have witnessed firsthand the benefits of NCCAT’s high-quality professional development seminars and programs. When teachers come back from NCCAT, they are recommitted to teaching; they remember why they entered the teaching profession in the first place. They find new ways to increase student learning by encourage their students to dive deeper into the lesson.”
In addition to serving on the NCCAT Board of Trustees, Womble has served in a leadership capacity for several organizations, including Engelhard Rotary International (2004–2006), Northeast Regional Service Alliance (2003–2005) and Hertford County North Carolina Association of Educators (1994–1995). He is currently a member of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, Rotary International and the American Association of School Administrators. Womble also has served on the board of directors for a variety of institutions, including the Northeast Workforce Development, North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association and the Museum of the Albemarle.
“This appointment confirms that the NCCAT Board of Trustees is committed to providing strong leadership and support for this organization and for public education in North Carolina,” said Linda S. Suggs of Morrisville, chair of the NCCAT Board of Trustees. “Dr. Womble’s credentials are stellar; he understands what teachers and students need to be successful and he knows the importance of good teaching.”
Womble received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University in Boone. Then he attended East Carolina University in Greenville where he earned a master’s degree in school administration, an educational specialist degree in administration and supervision, and a doctorate of education in educational leadership. He is a native of Winston-Salem.
“Investing in NCCAT makes the organization stronger,” Womble said. “Improving teacher effectiveness makes our state stronger. To this day, I believe that NCCAT offers the best professional development in the state—it’s a must!”
Per Section 115C-296.6 of the North Carolina General Statutes, the NCCAT Board of Trustees is composed of the following membership: the Chairman of the State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or their designees (both ex officio members); two members appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate; two members appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and eight members appointed by the Governor, one from each of the eight educational regions.
