CULLOWHEE (April 24, 2015)—Amy Jo Spencer, a distinguished career educator, has been named senior literacy specialist at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a recognized national leader in professional development for teachers. NCCAT Executive Director Richard Thompson announced the appointment, effective June 29th.
Spencer has been a presenter at NCCAT the last two years in the “Reading, Writing, and Ready by Third Grade: An Early Grades Literacy Course.” She also attended NCCAT as a teacher.
Spencer is currently serving as a fourth grade transition teacher at Pasquotank Elementary School in Elizabeth City and Title 1 Coordinator. She has been in the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Schools since 2001, including time as a first grade teacher and reading interventionist. In that role, she shared research and basic practices to help design customized lessons/activities to meet the diverse needs of their students.
“Amy Jo Spencer has an intimate understanding of the strategies and techniques essential to effectively providing high-quality professional development in literacy instruction,” Thompson said. “She has a real love for education and is an outstanding addition to our team.”
Spencer also has been serving as the community liaison in the Office of Graduate Education at Elizabeth City State University. She helped in recruitment efforts for their graduate program.
Spencer was the 2012 District Teacher of the Year from Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Schools.
