CULLOWHEE—Jean Powell, the woman whose vision created the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, recently met with NCCAT Executive Director Dr. M. Brock Womble.
Dr. Womble met with Powell and her family members on Sept. 28 in Wilmington. He was speaking to the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society Retired Physicians Section about NCCAT, a recognized national leader in professional development programming for North Carolina teachers.
In 1983, while serving as North Carolina Teacher of the Year Powell, of Clinton, was invited to address the Commission on Education and Economic Growth where she came up with the concept of NCCAT that was later established by the legislature.
In his remarks Dr. Womble told the group that North Carolina teachers have a home at NCCAT and NCCAT is the home of North Carolina teachers.
“It is an honor to meet Mrs. Powell. We appreciate her vision that created NCCAT and we will continue to work hard to provide the high-quality professional development she envisioned for teachers,” Womble said.
