NCCAT Development Foundation establishes Hurricane Dorian Employee Relief Fund

Ocracoke residents and others in surrounding communities are beginning the recovery process from the devastating damage of Hurricane Dorian. The Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Inc., has established the NCCAT Hurricane Dorian Employee Relief Fund to provide much-needed support for NCCAT current and past staff on Ocracoke Island.

“Our thoughts and hearts go out to all those on Ocracoke Island and others affected by Hurricane Dorian,” NCCAT Executive Director M. Brock Womble said. “We are working to be of whatever assistance we can to our staff and neighbors around Ocracoke Island.”

NCCAT employees, while physically safe, suffered disastrous property and vehicle damage. Significant cleanup efforts will be needed for the entire Island.

“During the flooding, we had water in every building on campus including the gym,” Hyde County Schools Superintendent Stephen G. Basnight, III, said in a statement released by the school system.  "The surrounding grounds are littered with debris. On top of that, almost all of our staff members and students are dealing with significant flooding issues in their homes and businesses.”

NCCAT appreciates the many people who have reached out about ways to help our employees and those recovering from Hurricane Dorian. We’ve been touched by how much our employees, the NCCAT campus and Ocracoke Island mean to educators and their friends throughout North Carolina.

“Our incredible staff on Ocracoke need help now, and we should be able to give them the support they need to sustain them and help rebuild their lives,” said Richard Schwartz, President of NCCAT’s Development Foundation.  “Please join us in this effort and contribute what you can.”
