We're always glad to have news about the NCCAT Honored Educator Scholarship program. The program helps honor great educators and create opportunities for others.
NCCAT’s Honored Educator Scholarship Program pays tribute to outstanding individuals and educators by providing scholarship funds in their names. Scholarship funds can be named in honor of classroom teachers, coaches, administrators, school board members, or community volunteers—anyone who has made a positive difference in the field of education. Donors can establish scholarships with preference for teachers from a geographic area or an academic discipline. NCCAT administers each scholarship that reaches the endowment goal of $25,000. These scholarships make it possible for NCCAT to serve more teachers by supplementing the annual state allocation. Each named scholarship will be awarded annually to a North Carolina teacher, who also will receive a $250 cash award for a classroom project.
Here is some recent news about the program ...
- Congratulations to Laura Byers, of Farmer Elementary in Randolph County. She received the Lynda Petty Honored Educator Scholarship today, which honors the late Lynda Petty who dedicated her life to improving public education for the children of Randolph County. Mrs. Petty, known as the "First Lady of NASCAR," supported the Randolph County community in many ways, including as a local leader in education.
- Kaleena Fleming has been named the Richard L. Thompson Honored Educator Scholar for 2014-15. Ms. Fleming is a teacher at Brier Creek Elementary in the Wake County School system. She attended the "Reading, Writing and Ready by Third Grade: Early Grades Literacy Instruction" in Cullowhee this week. Beginning his career as a classroom teacher and coach, the breadth and scope of Dr. Thompson's work includes service as a North Carolina principal and district superintendent, a state superintendent of education in Mississippi, and as a vice president in the University of North Carolina General Administration. Fortunately for NCCAT, he has also served as NCCAT's Executive Director from 1992-1994 and currently is in the role again. Congratulations to Kaleena!
