Group looks at Motivating Disengaged Students at Ocracoke program

A group of 24 North Carolina teachers came together for a few days at the Ocracoke campus of NCCAT for Motivating Disengaged Students to learn about the complexities of solving student engagement issues. What works in one class may be a failure in the next, with every year presenting new challenges for engaging students from different culture and racial/ethnic backgrounds in various lessons. We also addressed the "gender gaps" because the great majority of our teachers are women (over 80% in NC) and 50% of our students are males. In this program, the teachers had the opportunity to participate in a collaborative process (The Jigsaw Classroom) where they reviewed and evaluated strategies for motivating disengaged students they could implement upon returning to their classrooms. The program was led by Dr. Ernest Johnson of NCCAT.
