The North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) is a recognized leader in professional development for public school teachers.  Established by the State in 1985 with a mission to advance teaching as an art and a profession, NCCAT is dedicated to serving pre-K through 12th grade school teachers in order to enhance the learning of children of North Carolina.  The goal of NCCAT is to attract, retain, and support caring, highly qualified, and skilled teachers necessary to positively impact the quality of public education in North Carolina.  The Center's main focus is a year-round series of residential, off-site programs and seminars in the areas of the most current needs of teachers and state initiatives.  NCCAT's programs support teacher leadership, beginning teachers, and teachers and school districts that want to plan together to develop solutions for their schools.

This position will perform a variety of backup functions in support of the Ocracoke campus.  This position will change linens, clean and sanitize bathrooms; vacuum carpets; clean windows; sweep and mop floors; dust; empty trash and recycling receptacles; clean up food, beverage and bodily fluid spills.  The incumbent must observe conditions of assigned areas and correct deficiencies or generate work orders as needed.  This person will maintain a ready inventory of housekeeping supplies in central and point-of-use locations. 

This person will also assist in conference room setup; launder linens; arrange furniture; and maintain guest information and feedback materials in residences. 

This position may also be expected to assist or back up general utility work such as lawn maintenance, and occasional reception related duties at the main entrance to the NCCAT facility.  This position is expected to be a flex position and be subject to varying hours of work and may include evening and weekend work depending on teacher programming schedules. 

Recruitment for this position will target the Journey level of the Building Environmental Service band. The hiring range for this position is $26,000-$28,000 and the salary will be commensurate with the applicant's competencies as well as the budget, equity, and market considerations.  If no candidates are identified at the Journey competency level, management may consider candidates at the Contributing competency level. The hiring range at this level will be ($23,332-$25,999).  For promotional and reemployment priority purposes, this position is considered to be equivalent to salary grade 53 at the Journey level and a salary grade 50 at the Contributing level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

A qualified candidate must be able to read work schedules and diagrams of buildings to arrive at the assigned work area on a timely basis.  He/she must be able to perform basic cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, etc., to keep working areas in a clean and orderly condition.  The person must be able to fill dispensers such as tissue and soap dispensers with the proper product and amount.  A qualified candidate must be able to lift and carry 25-50 pounds including transport of goods up and down flights of stairs.  Must be able to walk, stand and stoop for extended periods of time.  Must be able to communicate with fellow workers in a manner that allow work to be completed and able to follow written and oral directions.  The incumbent must be able to interact with the public in a courteous and effective manner.

The candidate should also have a beginning level of experience with working with computers, greeting the public and answering phones and directing calls as appropriate.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

The minimum education and experience for this position are some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
